Something Sensational To Read On The Train

Anyone that knows me reasonably well will be aware that I love Italy – the country, the culture and the people. I first travelled to Italy on a school trip, in which we stayed in both Venice and Rome. We travelled by train, which took 2 days and we arrived in Venice late at night. The next day was my first real sight of Italy, and I fell in love with the faded grandeur of the city. Since then I have returned to Italy a number of times, both for work (in my academic days) and pleasure.

I first visited Campania in the 1980s and immediately fell in love with that part of Italy. It’s not too difficult to understand why this area has attracted so many artists (such as Ibsen, Wagner and Oscar Wilde), who found inspiration there.

My first trip to the region with SG was in 2001, when we stayed in Positano: SG had not been to Campania before, but also became as enthusiastic as I am. Since then we have been back for short breaks each year, but since 2001 have stayed in Sorrento, which is a better base for travelling (and also the hotel’s much better). We are thinking seriously about moving out there one day.

Tomorrow we will be flying out on our latest visit there (though unfortunately the weather reports don’t look too optimistic). The photographs below are from the 2001 & 2005 trips. There’s more from the trips in between, but I haven’t had time to upload them. When I do I will place them in the Campania gallery.

Campania is always beautiful, but this year when we visited it was a little on the cold side, although it did get warmer again on the final day.
