I have written before about my interest in makeup, particularly when the makeup is dramatic (see below).

My interest was first aroused as I was growing up in the 1960s / 1970s. I was in London for most of 1976, and not surprisingly found this to be a very inspiring time to be here.
That year there were many people walking up and down the Kings Road that looked amazing, and quite a lot (that didn’t) wanting to photograph them. One such follower I noticed I later found out to be Ted Polhemus. Despite the huge amount of interest, in what later became known in the tabloid press as a ‘bizarre cult sweeping Brittan’, there are surprisingly few photographs from those early days of punk on the internet. Nevertheless there are some gems (I love this photograph of Soo Catwoman).

I moved to Manchester in the autumn of 1976, but happily the good people of the North West had caught on to this ‘bizarre cult’ in a big way. It was a while before I plucked up the courage, but eventually I started using makeup myself, starting at first just with eyelinger, which I persuaded a friend to get for me. I got gradually more adventurous, and not just for clubbing. For about 3 years I wore makeup and nail polish every day (except when I went to visit my parents).

I have not used makeup for some time, but I do still like to see other people’s work. One person that I admire a great deal is the artist / model razor_cani.
