Something Sensational To Read On The Train

Doors close, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel

I was somewhat dismayed to hear that the Dali Universe in SE1 has now closed, albeit with the intention of relocating elsewhere.  I guess this is yet another victim of the recession.  If it had been news that the ghastly London Dungeon has closed, I would have been quite pleaed.

The ‘good news’ is that the railway arch in Clink Street will soon be benefiting from a silent firework display.  What’s not silent is the relentless Gregorian chant coming from the Clink itself.  Visitors scurrying past would have no idea there had once been a notorious prison there.  On the other hand, just a few metres down the road (opposite HSBBC) there is a sign, informing visitors of the area’s unsavoury past, and the cruel treatment of bears.

Perhaps I am stating the obvious, but it’s about time some attention was paid to the needs of the people that actually live in the area.  By that I mean people that live more than a stone’s throw away from the riverbank.  A common complaint wherever there are tourists intermingling with residents and workers.  However as the dreaded 2012 draws ever closer, it will undoubtedly be the case that the residents will be increasingly neglected.  Hopefully we’ll be elsewhere by then.
