Something Sensational To Read On The Train

Sorrento and Lifts
We’ve started to plan our annual trip to Italy, although at the moment it’s just pencilling in some dates in the diary. This time we’re intending to go in early November, which is a bit later than normal but the weather should still be fine. I’ve had a look at the website for the ‘Teatro di San Carlo’ (Naples Opera House) to try to find out what will be on whilst we’re over there, but there’s no details of the 2006-07 season yet. One thing we will definitely be doing is having a meal at Don Alfonso’s restaurant in Sant Agata sui Due Golfi. It’s Michelin rated and reputed to be the best restaurant in the south of Italy, and I for one would not disagree.

On a somewhat perverse note: Listening to the collection of songs by Beniamino Gigli I can’t help thinking that ‘Funiculi-Funicula’ would sound rather interesting done in a punk or reggae style. You might understand what I mean if you’d heard the version of this song by Gigli. This song was written to commemorate the opening of a funicular lift that went up Mount Vesuvius. Somehow I can’t imagine a song written to commemorate the Millennium wheel being in any sense popular now, let alone in hundred or so year’s time.
