Back in 1984 Doris Soffel shaved her head to play the part of  Prince Orlofsky, in Die Fledermaus at Covent Garden.  I remember watching the opera on the BBC at the time.   It’s one of my favorite operas, and this was a particularly good production.  Interestingly enough I have just found this clip on Youtube.
