Going Back to My Roots
Body Painting1

For the past couple of years or so a lot of the music I’ve been purchasing has been from artists from way back.  Not that I’m ignoring contemporary artists, but rather  I’m finally getting around to buying stuff I bought years ago, and lost when my music collection was stolen when my apartment was bugled.

Also in many cases I’m finding myself curious as to where some of my favourite artists got their influences from.  So it was something of a revelation when I started listening Howlin Wolf.  I’ve always been a big fan of the blues (initially the old Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall / Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, but also Freddie King, BB King, Muddy Waters and so on).  I’ve known for sometime that Marc Bolan was influenced by Howlin Wolf, and having listened to his music now I can see that this is indeed true.  If you are curious as to where Marc’s electric guitar style came from, have a listen to Howlin Wolf performing songs like ‘Do The Do ’ and ‘300lbs Of Joy ’.  Absolutely brilliant!  I could imagine Marc doing a wonderful version of ‘300lbs Of Joy ’ – slimmed down to more like 110lbs or so though.
