Something Sensational To Read On The Train

Blue is the Colour

I have just made my nomination for the London borough of Southwark’s Blue Plaque award for 2007.  I’ve had a look through the previous nominations of people, places and events, and winners since the scheme was introduced in 2003.  Given the history of the area there’s no shortage of worthy nominees.  Not surprising to see that the great Charles Dickens has already been honoured, and the / literary / artistic connections have also been reflected in blue plaques for Sam Wanamaker, The Globe Theatre, Charlie Chaplin, Michael Caine and others, though I am under whelmed by an award for Enid Blyton (sadly nor yet for William Blake, who’s work I have been very fond of ever since I first saw the drawing of Nebuchadnezzar that was reproduced on the 1st Atomic Rooster Album cover).  The world of science and engineering is also reflected with blue plaques for Charles Babbage, Michael Faraday Isambard Kingdom Brunel.  The medieval prison ‘The Clink’ received a blue plaque back in 2003, as did the rather more pleasant Borough Market.

I’m very much in favour of this scheme, more so for the benefit of the local population although it helps to attract tourists.  It’s important to remind ourselves that history is not just about who won which war and when.  I like to feel that I am open minded, but I can’t help being annoyed that awards have been given to not one but 2 braches of a pie and mash shop.  This I would regard as pretty low down on the list of history worth preserving, and is just inverted snobbery.

Anyway, I did feel tempted to nominate William Blake, but I have gone for the Cross Bones Graveyard instead.  Somewhat grim maybe, but it does highlight the blatant hypocrisy that can be exhibited by those with the power to exert control over our lives ( previously discussed).  Particularly poignant at the moment I think, given all the back slapping that’s been going on not too far from here.
