It would be great if Britney Spears truly embraces the shaved head look, and defiantly appears in public, on stage, in videos etc without a wig or head covering. Somehow I suspect that this will not be the case. I’m sure there are plenty of ‘hangers on’ around her that will en masse be pointing out that this was a bad idea. I hope I’m wrong, and that she’s getting some positive feedback, because to me at least she looks better without hair, and if the footage from the tattoo parlour is anything to go by, looks happier as well.
The response from the media has been disturbing, but predictable, even the so called quality press. It may well be that Britney Spears is on the verge of a breakdown, but it is ludicrous to postulate that shaving one’s head is symptomatic of this. This says more about the prejudice of the authors than it does about the pop start being written about. This unduly sensationalist response is reminiscent of the obituaries of Margaux Hemingway, who committed suicide some years ago, and started shaving her head 3 months before she died. Thus according to this simplistic rules, if you shave your head you must be mentally ill!
I remember when I first started shaving my head I got so much verbal (and sometimes physical) abuse. Over a hairstyle? Jonathon Swift would be bemused by that I’m sure.
