Some time ago my partner, Christie Elan-Cane, reported on a small, but significant victory in what will undoubtedly be a long campaign for official recognition of non-gendered, or gender neutral identity.  Our local Primary Care Trust, for some spurious reason, had introduced an automated check in system that required patients to identify themselves as male or female.  For anyone that does not fit neatly into this bipolar categorisation, this is an offensive question.

After A LOT of hard work, Christie managed to get the automated check in system changed, so that this unnecessary question was removed.  The updated check in system has been in place for some time.  It is with regret that I have to report that a recent visit to our GP has revealed that the old M/F question has returned.  This is really not good enough, and is either a reflection of total lack of respect for the non gendered minority, or gross incompetence.  Either way this is a step in the wrong direction, and something I expect to be corrected as a matter of urgency.

Update 21-Jun-2010: It seems that there was a hardwre failure recently of the system hosting the automated check in.  As a result of the Disaster Recovery, an old version of the software was re-loaded.  The company that provided the software have been contacted to get the correct version loaded.

CChristie has contacted our GP's surgery manage to find out why the check in system was changed back, but there's been no response yet.

The news article is just weird. I don't see the justification for customising course at all, but on the basis of gender is nonsensical. Quite rightly the NUT was not impressed with that idea.
