Southwark Blue Plaque Awards 2008 – 2009

I’ve just come across this web page, announcing the winners of the latest Southwark Blue Plaque awards. A cemetery was included this time, but not the one I wanted to win (the Cross Bones cemetery). I was somewhat bemused to see that Charlie Drake was one of the winners (I remember having one of his comedy records when I was a kid). Not sure about East Street Market. In theory it’s good that there is still a street market there, but I am dubious about it winning any kind of accolade. I did used to frequent the market years ago, but I stopped going there because I got fed up with the market traders trying to rip me off.

On the other hand, I am very pleased to learn that Peter Tatchell has won a Blue Plaque award. This is thoroughly deserved, and I agree completely with the first comment. Sadly I fear that many of the residents of the London borough of Southwark may not agree with me in this respect. I expect that some may well feel tempted to express their Neanderthal opinions in the form of vandalism. Hopefully I am wrong.
