In an earlier posting I cited the Rudi Gernreich ‘shaved head’ models as an inspiration, when I was growing up in the North of England. So it was interesting to get a reminder of this, when I discovered these web pages.

Back in 1970 this gained a lot of publicity, mainly due to the fact that the models had shaved heads; more so I would guess than the fact that they finished off the show naked. Were this to be repeated now, no doubt the nakedness would cause more of a stir.

I was captivated by the photographs of Tom and Renee (sadly only 1 here). What really got people’s attention was that they looked so different to everyone else (at that point in time it was “fashionable” for men to have long hair, and moustache & beard – hence David Bowie’s lyric “Look at those cavemen go”).

Somehow I doubt if Rudi ever thought that this look, and the unisex clothes, was the shape of things to come. Nevertheless it made a lasting impression, and had more of an effect than he realized. So I wonder what happened to Tom and Renee, and how they felt about this experience later?
