I first heard about the Peter Principle back in my academic days.  His book on this topic was particularly popular amongst my Psychology colleagues.  I recommend it.  It is informative and entertaining.

Although much of the book is ‘tongue in cheek’, there are serious aspects to the principle, and one does not have to look too far to find examples of people that have risen to their level of incompetence.  I certainly came across a lot more examples after I left academia and started work in a business environment.

Which makes me wonder why the Peter Principle is not discussed so much these days.  I can think of a certain British Prim Minister that is the living embodiment of the Peter Principle (and for that matter a certain President).
