Woke up early this morning.  I hate it when that happens, because I can’t get back to sleep, and I end up feeling tired for the rest of the day.  Gives me a chance to catch up on work though, and I am running behind schedule on my new project.  I can hear helicopters overhead, so I guess the London marathon must have started, or be about to start.  Well at least this year I can’t complain that it woke me up.

The Manu Dibango concert at the Barbican on Wednesday certainly lived up to my expectations.  Although I have been fond of his music for many years, I know him mainly for the dance oriented music such as Soul Makosa and Jingo, and had never previously seen him in concert.  Not surprisingly I guess, since he’s been in the music business for 50 years, I had not heard many of the songs that were played on Wednesday, but the sounded absolutely wonderful.  Some of it sounded Cuban influenced, and one the whole it came across as contemporary jazz.  Manu played some amazing duets with the other saxophone player.  During one of the songs there was a truly awe inspiring drum solo, which reminded me in some way of Ginger Baker, though I would say that Ginger (who has actually played with Manu Dibango) would have to take second place to this.  They played Soul Makosa as an encore, but we did not get to hear Jingo I’m afraid.  Maybe next time?
