If a Spade is a Spade then what is a Mission Statement?

I’m getting increasingly annoyed by the increasing number of mission statements that include wording such as ‘…work passionately to aim to deliver a total quality experience that exceeds our customers' expectations’.  Well the Barbican theatre complex is has such a mission statement.  This is completely meaningless drivel, and the great satirist Jonathon Swift would no doubt have had something to say about that in Gulliver’s Travels had mission statements existed in his time.  Anyway since these are the measures by which we are increasingly being judged, if I had been the line manger of the staff of Searcy’s restaurant at the Barbican I would have been included to rate them ‘Needs Improvement’ come appraisal time (Yes this is another rant about London restaurants.).

I tried to book a table for SG and myself at the restaurant after the Manu Dibango concert next Wednesday, but to no avail.  Apparently the concert is due to finish at 10.30pm, which is the time the kitchen closes, and (despite being advertised as being available for post performance bookings) they are not willing to stay open any later to accommodate us, or indeed anyone else at the Barbican that night.  We’re unlikely to find anywhere else at that time, so we’ll have to come back and eat at home.  It’s cheaper of course but not the same experience.  London is such a dismal place in many respects!

Well I have registered a complaint about this via the website, so we shall see.  It’s a real shame because the concert is going to be really something, and we had no trouble booking a table after the Madeleine Peyroux concert back in December.
